ESIX, X, and the Display

I am going to be purchasing ESIX SysV R3.2 sometime in the next month, to
put on a 386 box that I'll also be purchasing. Unfortunately I'm in a
bit of a spot. I use Sun equipment in my work environment and would like
to stick with a large paper-white 19" display, but the cost of doing this
for a 386 machine seems prohibitive. Companies like Moniterm, and Elite
Microsystems are quoting me prices between $1400 to $2500 for a monitor
and driver card, and then I don't even know if ESIX would supply a driver
capable of running the display.
So my questions are:
1. Does anyone know of a more reasonably priced monitor/card combo
that would be compatible with ESIX? ( I have seen some slightly
smaller displays ie. 1000x1000 for less. )
2. Failing this, is VGA at 1024x768 the way to go? If so, then what
are some people's experiences with this type of setup.
3. Does the SVGA maximum resolution make it a suitable platform for
running XWindows?
4. Any specific monitors or cards that I should stay away from? (
I've been looking at a NEC 3D and Orchid ProDesigner 512k as
an option for a VGA setup. )
Thanks in advance.
