VGA problem with ISC X11 on Dell 310

I just got an answer -- not a solution, but an answer -- to my problem
from someone at Interactive.  It seems their VGA driver has a bug that
causes the non-X VT displays to go blank if you're using a monochrome
monitor, as I am.
