signal there is a good summary of distributed file systems in

"Distributed File Systems: Concepts and Examples", Levy, Eliezer and
Silberschatz, Abraham, ACM Computing Surveys, Volume 22, Number 4,
December 1990, pps. 321-374.

I'll leave photocopying it as an exercise for the reader.
