2.3.1 out soon

Well, just received my pre-release copy of 2.3.1 Sys V/AT today. I'm told
the en mass release is not far off. I just thought Microport dserverd some
good press.

First off, let's point out right here, all of the things we loved about the
286 and Unix before 2.3.1 are still here. Microport didn't fix the 64k
segment boundry problem for us -- nor can they I suppose. (I just can't
afford a 386, or will it be 486 by then.) The new version doesn't shame
a Sun, nor does it compile the pathalias database in sixty seconds. IT DOES
RUN UNIX ON THE AT REASONABLY WELL.

Microport received a lot of bad review after the release of 2.2x Sys V/AT.
I feel that a lot of this was deserved as I, for one, was tired on booting
and trying to run Unix without a console. (Just a petty little request I know,
but I'm just hard to please you see.) Well, the new version is out, and I
just hope 2.2 people out there give 2.3.1 a fair shake. Remember how we
all wowwed 1.3 for what it could do for the price? This is what 2.2 should
have been. Some of the things that have been fixed are:

- Console now works!
- Console ansi sequences actually work better
- Kernel process size is tunable
- uucico no longer dumps core
- 3.5" disk support has been added
- Tape driver support is included.
- Ram disk is included
- Virtual consoles are allocated as needed -- they don't sit idle w. getty
- The clock actually keeps time fairly well
- Serial driver doesn't panic -- as least for me.
- Vi and dosxx utilities work better
- 4096 drive support

It's not perfect, but this is at least a version where I don't feel I'm
doing more work fixing the system than Microport is. I noticed from net
traffic a lot of you already have 2.3 so this isn't a big deal, but for
those of you with 2.2, this is worth getting.

And now for the standard dribble.....

Ths views expressed herein are my own and do not in any way reflect those
of Microport Corp -- though I'm sure they're pleased with THESE views at
least. I do not work for Microport in any way, BUT I AM GRADUATING THIS
FALL AND IF THEY FELT THEY REALLY NEEDED ME....
