Smart Serial Boards

I'm sure this has been answered before, but I wasn't paying attention...

We need advice on smart serial boards that work with 386/ix.
Horror stories and success stories are appreciated, as well
as any hard facts on performance, compatibility, etc.

We anticipate a need for at least 32 ports, and possibly 48 or
64 ports.  The ports will support terminals.  Most of the traffic
will be output, probably at 9600 but maybe at 19.2.  Input will
be from hunk-and-peck typists.

We are interested in 8 or 16 port boards, AT bus.  We will be needing
quantities in the several thousands per year.
