Multivolume Backups

Some time ago there was a discussion of retrieving files from a
multivolume backup on tape. I didn't save that information and
now I need it. Could some kind soul mail me the solution (or
post it if you feel it is appropiate). If I receive email and there
is an expression of interest I will, of course, post the information.

Details of the problem:

Configuration: 386 clone (DTK mother board with Phoenix BIOS),
Everex interface card and Wangtek drive
                    Maxtor 318 Mb disk drive
Microport 3.0e plus QIC-02 streaming driver

Commands: Tapes created with cpio -olvB | strm

Retreival attempted with cpio -ivBdu < /dev/mt/rmt 0
                                   and strm | cpio -ivBdu

Results: First tape reads and ends with a message about out of sync
and second tape (read attempted with the same command) is
rejected as not being a cpio tape.

Guesses: I think the second tape would have to be read from a cpio
or strm continuation command to be valid. I don't see a
flag in cpio or strm that says this is a multivolume tape.
Since I didn't see a flag, I rashly assumed that cpio was
smart enough to put a to be continued marker at the end of
              the first tape.

Help. Thanks in advance.
