Why fgrep?

In every machine I've played with, fgrep has never
performed better than plain old grep for any data I've given
it (and on some machines, it is *considerably* slower).

Is there ever a situation (these days) where fgrep is
preferable to grep? About the only thing that remotely
comes to my mind is that you don't have to worry quite
so much about escaping metacharacters, but I always
quote literal strings anyway.

Just curious.
