Tar won't write to default devices

Thank you to 
    Terry Laskodi <terryl%tekcrl.labs.tek.com at RELAY.CS.NET> and
    root at phx.mcd.mot.com (0000-Admin(0000))

Both of whom came up with the same explanation.  Tar apparently is
brain dead and tries to open the default device read/write.
I suspect that there is some problem with the permissions, and I will
check this tomorrow morning.  Thanks guys.
