Another problem is:
...
>? #define ENDOFFILE -1
...
>?               done=ENDOFFILE;

some compilers will interpret this as the old =- assignment
operator. this is one place where style can really make a difference:

	done = ENDOFFILE;

is easier to read and doesn't piss off cc.
