pathalias and aliases, do I *need* smail ?

I am interested in implementing pathalias without replacing sendmail with
smail or one of its competitors. I plan to make *that* change once I've had
a chance to build and road test the new version of smail.

My questions are:
	- Can I do this ? Reading the various sets of docs, it looks
like makedb will create something which is compatible with an
aliases dbm file. What sets of options/flags etc do I need to
use to bring this about ?

	- Do I need to write some sort of a shell alias to do the lookups
before handing off to sendmail ?

Thanks for the help. I'll summarize if there is enough interest.
