BSD gethostby[addr, name] functions

Is the source for the gethostbyname and gethostbyaddr functions available
anywhere on the net by ftp?  If so, is it under the Berkeley "as is"
software agreement (can it be used, modified, or redistributed as long
as due credit is given to the University) or is it proprietary?
