Here's an example that should get you in the right direction:

awk 'BEGIN { 
	SQ = sprintf("%c", 39);
	DQ = sprintf("%c", 34);
}
{
	printf("%cHow is this?%c\n", DQ, DQ);
	printf("%cAnd this?%c\n", SQ, SQ);
}
