configuration management

We are currently examining how to best handle configuration management
for our s/w development groups. In general this seems to be a
problem that is broader than just source code in that it need to track at
least: defects and their associations with source and with builds;
file versions (source code but also binaries such as frame documents,
third party binaries for compilers,tools etc.); and configuration
information which defines what file versions, environment versions,
documents, etc. are part of a particular product release.
Sun's nse product for example is starting to address these issues but is not
currently suitable if your target systems are other UNIX systems.

I'd be very interested in getting pointers to newsgroups that discuss
this area or hearing from anyone who has experience in this area
or what just like to hear what we are up to.

Please mail to me & i'll summarize as appropriate - thanks
