How can I change size of per process file table?

I have an application in mind for which I want about 100 files open at the same
time. With the kernel I'm running on my SparcStation, the limit seems to be 64
(I wrote a program that just kept opening more and more until it got an error
from open()). My impression is that the only way to change this is by
reconfiguring the kernel. I tried to change MAXUSERS, but this didn't work.

Is this change a bad idea? Why? I have a fair amount of memory on my machine
(16 Meg) -- it seems to me that 64 files is a little small.

Please respond to me by mail -- I'll summarize responses to the group.

Thanks,
