force the writer of a pipe to use unbuffered I/O?

Is there a way to force the writer of a pipe to use unbuffered I/O 
if you don't have source for it (so you can't use setbuf and recompile it)
for System V?

I want to execute a command and monitor it's output but I don't want 
to wait for the buffer to fill up before I get anything to read...
