TrailBlazer+ woes

I wasn't successful in generating any response the last time this
article was posted, so here it is again...

I am attempting to configure a new TrailBlazer Plus to initiate
uucp connections on a BSD4.3 VAX. It is to replace another Hayes
compatible modem which has been handling our uucp for years.

On attempting to initiate a connection, the following message gets
logged:

uucp uunet (4/24-15:15-18612) HSM seems dead (/dev/ttyd6)
uucp uunet (4/24-15:15-18612) LOST LINE (LOGIN)
uucp uunet (4/24-15:15-18612) HSM did not respond to ATZ ()
uucp uunet (4/24-15:15-18612) FAILED (call to uunet )

To eliminate as many variables as possible, I have been experimenting
in Conventional Command Mode at 1200 bps (default settings except
X0, &D{1,3}, S37=5). *Many* other register permutations were also
tried but the result was always the same. No system files have been
changed from the old 1200 bps Hayes configuration that works:

uucp uunet (4/24-15:45-18697) SUCCEEDED (call to uunet )
uucp uunet (4/24-15:45-18697) OK (startup ttyd6 1200 baud)
uucp uunet (4/24-15:45-18697) OK (conversation complete)

Telebit uses the AT command Z(n) for a reset, with n being either
0 or 1 and used to select either profile A or B. All the other
"Hayes" modems we have use Z. Is this difference the cause of my
problems? If so, what is issuing the reset? It doesn't appear
in any configuration file. Please note that while the TrailBlazer
refuses to work as an ACU for uucp, it *does* work fine with tip.

Thanks in advance for any insight provided on this situation.
