Restoring file from beyond EOT marker on tape

We have a 1/4 inch tape cartridge that contains a large tar file. The first
part of the tape somehow got some garbage and stray EOF markers on it. At
some point, there are two consecutive EOF markers, causing mt, tar, dd, read(),
and other such items to think that the tape ends at the second EOF. Does
anyone know of any way to obtain the data that is left beyond the second
EOF marker? We are using SunOS 4.0.3 (so there is no way of setting a flag
to ignore the EOF as you can do in Ultrix). Please respond by E-mail and
I'll summarize to the net if there is interest.
