write-once filesystems for tape?

Actually, I don't need a full-blown file system; I'd settle for operations
enough for me to make and delete directories and add and delete files. I'd
even settle for a good tape archive program.

tar(1) would just about do if I could get the "r" option to work. I have a
sun 4/110 with an exabyte drive (I really want to store hundreds of Meg on
this thing), and the "r" option doesn't work.

Does anyone have any suggestion or pointers? Thanks,
