xmodem / kermit woes

I'm having difficulty achieving an xmodem transfer over a phone line
from my Sparc to another computer. That is, xmodem doesn't have
dialout capability, and so I must use a program such as kermit
to achieve the connection. I've tried xcomm, but the xmodem there is
fairly cheesy. My ultimate goal, of course, is to be able to use my
zmodem. Anyway, how do I get xmodem to operate on the correct line?
If I type ``!xmodem -rbyk <file>'' from the C-kermit prompt, it
gives me the error that it can't change the tty mode. (??) Is there
any way that I can do xmodem through the kermit dialer?
Also, if possible, can anyone with an idea respond by mail? Thanks!
