How to determine if 7- or 8-bit line in use?

Hi. I am working on an application that at times utilizes
highlighted text. However, I am informed that some of our users who
are coming in over a 7-bit data line are not getting the highlighting
code properly. They are getting a bunch of "[[0m" type junk on their
screens. What I need is this:

	1) Is there a way to tell (preferably within a C program) if
the user is on a 7-bit data line?

	2) I am currently using curses to produce the highlighting
effect. Is there some other method that would not produce the
problem?

	3) We are running 4.3 BSD, but will soon be switching over
to Dynix/PTX.

	Any help will be appreciated.
