A couple of weeks ago I asked if anyone knew of a catalog of
third party software for 386ix. Doug Pintar of ISC responded
with the order number for ISC's collection of information on
third party software. If you didn't catch the reference, the
title is "Application Catalog for Interactive UNIX Systems";
the order number is BRO-0011; and the cost is $10.95 plus
shipping. You can order it from the ISC order desk (800 346 7111;
sorry I don't have the outside the US telephone number but I
assume your distributer can get the book for you).
The book lists approximately 300 applications and tools but
I know of two Ada compilers not listed (DDCI and Telesoft) so
I don't think it is definitive. The information about each
application includes the usual marketing hype, a telephone
number, and a contact name. It does not include required
system features (i.e., TCP/IP and X), minimum memory size,
storage space requirements, installation media available,
availability of training, system administration features/
requirements, price, ... (If you get the idea I wanted more
information for my money, you are right.)
For my tastes this catalog has enough information to start a
search and should be given away free to get people to use
ISC's product. If you are trying to set up applications for
other people, I think it is worth the money. If you part of
a small company on a tight budget, it is still worth the money
but you will feel bad about it. If you are purchasing a new
copy of 386ix or a major upgrade, try to get the vendor to
throw this book in for free.
