If you live outside the US it is not worth contacting JDR Microdevices
because they try and do the "right thing", namely, they will ask you to
fill out an export declaration form to the effect that you will not pass
on the chips to unspecified other nations.  They also have a minimum order
amount, which from memory was worth 2-3 chips.  

Thanks for posting the saga.  I am sure many will appreciate the effort.
