1. The secure keyboard is to lock keyboard focus on that one window until
you unsecure it. The inverse video serves as a reminder to you that this
has been done. This is because some window managers (uwm, hpwm, mwm)
allow focus to follow the pointer (mouse) and your typing will end up
in another window if... heck, everyone has done this so you know what
I mean.

2. You can have something like this (using dxwm):

! 0 says big, 1 says small

wm*WmIconForm.iconStyle: 1
wm*emacs*iconStyle:	1
wm*Mail*mainWindow.iconStyle:	0
wm*Mail*read.iconstyle:	1
wm*Mail*send.iconstyle:	1
wm*PSViewer.iconStyle:	1
wm*Paint.iconStyle:	0
wm*Calendar.iconStyle:	0
wm*Notepad.iconStyle:	0
wm*DXterm*iconStyle:	1
wm*iconBox.background: #ffffb332cccc
wm*iconBox*background: #b0a3b0a3b0a3
wm*iconBox*foreground: Blue
