want init to prompt for password before going single-user

Doubtlessly this has been asked before, but let me ask anyways.

We want init to prompt for the root password before going into single
user mode.  Unfortunately, Ultrix doesn't have the extra semantics of
the field "secure" in ttys (ttytab) that SunOS has to do this.

How have people worked around this ?
