Rather than try to guess or even think about it, let me point out that
in most cases some useful information can be gleaned from running the
fverify program.

cd /
foreach i (/usr/etc/subsets/*inv)
echo Checking $i
fverify -n < $i
end


In your case, check things like a bad format or bad info in /etc/hosts,
bad /usr/bin/mail program, etc.
