dbx problem

dear Ultrix wizards,
I'm trying to debug a large fortran program which core-dumps
after a segmentation fault. When I start the debugger, dbx2.0,
and before dbx outputs its prompt, I get about 100 warnings like
warning: unexpected symbol <symbol-name> in field list
(many if not all of these symbols are names of common blocks and
statement functions)
after that, the debugger dies with an internal error:
dbx: internal error: unexpect sc in . symbol (.ub_cinp.1) got 16
This is on a DECstation 5000 running Ultrix V4.1 & f77 V2.0, but
I obtain the same behaviour on a DS3100 running Ultrix V3.1 and f77 V2.0
It looks a bit like some tables in the debugger might be overflowing,
but I cannot find any options to dbx that might let me increase any such
tables
Does anyone understand what is going on here? Or how one might work
around it? I hate debugging large programs by inserting print
statements everywhere!
Many thanks in advance for any help!
