Modem Control via Cron

I am trying to send a string to a modem on a shared line in order
to disable auto-answer during the day.

The problem is that simple programs like cat don't handle
the shared line correctly and block, and programs like
tip won't run in non-interactive mode.

Is there existing code that will send a string to a
shared line when it is not in use? I don't really
want to write my own (even starting with the current
kermit source.)

Any suggestions?
