sendmail with 8 data bits ??

The ULTRIX sendmail does *not* allow 8-bit mail.  There are
`unofficial' versions (such as one supplied by DEC/Japan) that
allow 8-bit mail.

The reason is simple.  If you include a line with the
character '\256' (period with the MSB set, R-with-a-
circle in ISO8859-1)  by itself, then the message will
be truncated at that point by a version of sendmail
that isn't 8-bit clean.  This is not clever, it corrupts
mail messages.  Think twice about the simple solutions.
