login problems and ethernet monitor

Dear Ultrix Users:
First, our configuration. We have a DECstation 3100 running as an NFS
and YP server for two DECstation 2100s.
Two questions:
1) We have had users, on occasion, be unable to login to the systems.
They have not changed their password. To get them going again, we
must clear the password field in the YP database and then push the
database. Has anyone else seen this? This has not 'yet' become a
large problem but easily could become one.
2) Not being a Unix expert, this may be obvious to one. Is there a
utility, PD or regular system utility, to show the activity on the
ethernet interface? I don't need anything that will capture
packets, maybe someday, but can at least show me what is happening
on the wire.
Any information on either topic is greatly appreciated. Thanks.
