Berkeley mail permits mapping any network character into any other.  As
distributed, /etc/delivermail will map '^' into '!'.  This is presumably
for the benefit of csh-ers, since '!' is exceedingly special to it, whereas
'^' is not.  (Speaking of which:  does anyone know any reason not to yank
'^' as an alternate pipe symbol from the Bourne shell?)
