I've mailed off to JMETZGER a slightly more robust version of the
4.0bsd Tar that I've used to read bad tapes.  A few details in case
anyone else is interested in getting it:

  a) It "recovers" after reading bad tape blocks during the "t"
     and "x" commands.

  b) If a bad data block is read, it is discarded and the name
     of the file with the missing block is logged.

  c) If a bad directory block is read (directory blocks contain
     information about the following file, they're not real unix
     directory blocks), that block and the following data blocks
     are discarded until a valid directory block is encountered.
     Warning msg produced for each block skipped.
