Runaway Dumps

Has anyone running V6 Unix on a PDP 11/40 ever had this problem:
Tapes running away only when dump is called.  The other tape
systems like tp, stp, and the dd feature work ok--in fact I
am using dd to back up the system.  The problem at first was 
confined to one drive; then the other drive became affected.
So far the technicians found no gross defects in the tape
drive hardware.  I recompiled dump and even reloaded a system
two years old all to no avail.

All suggestions and advice are welcome.
