If you are running on a vax and have the Bell 32/V license and distribution,
dig out the tape and look for /etc/cpio and /usr/src/cmd/cpio.c. Its all there
except for the manual page. You'll have to get the manual page from a PWB/UNIX
manual. 

Cpio is a predecessor to TAR(1). In the version on the vax, it even allows
larger tape blocks. The pwb one didn't. In some ways I prefer it to tar.
Especially because it has a -p option (for pass) that allows cpio to copy
a directory hierarchy from disk to disk in a single pass (unlike the tar
method of two tars passing data thru a pipe).
