I think we're about to re-invent the concept of the one-level store,
first proposed (as far as I can remember) by Dennis and Van Horn in
their 1966 CACM paper, "Programming Semantics for Multiprogrammed
Computations", CACM, v9n3, March 1966, recently reprinted in the CACM
25th anniversary edition.

If you've never read this paper, go out and do it now. It's an amazing
collection of foresight and forethought.
