problem with changing termcap---help

I am trying to play rogue with a smaller screen.  I have succeeded in
shrinking the screen, but when it comes time to calculate a level,
the system locks up; i.e. it just sits there forever.  I don't seem to have
any trouble with vi so I think the termcap is ok.  Does anyone have
an explanation and/or a fix?  Thanks.
