It's obviously a ``feature'' (after all, how could it be an accident?).
I just think that there's got to be a better way.  I kinda like Emacs's
auto-execute myself, though it would be a bit hard to define how that
should work in vi.  Perhaps (in a .exrc):

    autoexecute *.nr { set ignorecase nowrapscan }
    autoexecute *.sh { <whatever> }

(Of course there would be a nice cryptic version:  "ae *.nr {se ic nows}"!)
