It well may be that I don't understand your problem, but how about a

	PATH=/usr/local/cross-tools:$PATH

in your .profile on the host machine? Or to do BOTH host and cross
development from the same login (not an unusual request), a "one-liner"
named "cross":

	PATH=/usr/local/cross-tools:$PATH exec "$@"

Then you say

	cross cc -o foo foo.c

(Clearly, "cross68", "cross88", etc. are doable. ;-} )
