It is important that you set the 220 to 7 BITS, MARK PARITY or 7 BITS,
SPACE PARITY, or one of the "no check" modes (I don't THINK it makes a
difference which one of these four you use ....).  BTW, when you do
this, how are you going to use ESC (C-[ works, but ugh!).
