Dead (?) ports

I have two 750s running Ultrix V1.0 (blah!).  Machine A (3 DMFs) has one
port (port 0) on one controller that won't init.  Machine B (1 DMF, 1 DHU)
has 4 ports (!) on the DHU that won't init.  All the toggle switches on
the controllers are ok, and all ports are configured the same to the s/w.
Why won't init talk to these guys?  Bad controllers, or s/w problem?  Any
suggestions appreciated; I'll summarize to the net.
