Hewlett-Packard has had a Remote File Access (RFA) protocol available on
its HP9000 Series 500 systems on the market since 1983, and it is now available
on the Series 300 (680xx-based systems). This RFA maps MOST HP-UX file system
calls (section 2) into remote calls if the file specified resides on a remote
file system. RFA requires the user to "login" to the remote system prior to
using it (this can be done automatically in a ".login" file). All accesses to
files on the remote system depend on the permissions associated with the login
id used for that machine.
HP-UX RFA is not public domain software.
