SYSV message queues?

Anybody had experience with SYSV version 2+ message queueing facility?

How much overhead does it add to the existing shared memory interface (context
switching, core to core copies, etc... )?

I'm interested in it for doing interprocess communication and I'm curious
about it's performance and idiosyncracies. Any suggestions? Warnings?
