Suns and laserwriters and ptroff and ".bp"

Anyone any idea why ".bp"s seem to be usually
ignored using ptroff on a Sun to laserwriter combination?
Doesn't make any difference whether it's "ms" or "me" macros.
(this is driving me bananas...)
