need c++ compiler (source?) for university research

I am in need of locating a C++ interpretter or compiler to run on
Ultrix (BSD unix). If possible, the source would be nice too. This
is for research and teaching in a university computer science program,
and not for commercial developement.

Does anyone in netland know where such a package could be obtained (if
it even exists), and what (if any) possibilities that the package could
be either very cheap or, I dare say, free? Sort of the way Little
Smalltalk by Timothy Budd is. They are interested in using to teach the
principles of object oriented programming and also to extend on the
C language They teach already.

If anyone can help on this, I would be most grateful! If nothing else,
please direct me to the proper sources that can help. A commercially
packaged C++ system for their machine runs in the $Thousands and they
are more interested in a new MicroVax at that price. I am posting this
for the Department of Computer Science at Middle Tennessee State Univ.

Thank you.

Mark.
