I seems to me that  it must be more than that.  On Suns at least, we
had certain applications that would die horribly if run under script.
To catch their output, I would go to another machine, start up
script, telnet or rlogin to the target machine and run the program.
This worked fine, and both telnet and rlogin use ptys...
