UNIX Scheduling Algorithms

I need to find out what algorithm(s) different UNIX implementations use
to distribute CPU time among processes. As I understand it, most use
a technique that lowers the priority of compute-intensive tasks, but
I have no idea of the details or how they vary from system to system
(BSD, System V, SunOS, Xenix, etc.). Could those who are knowledgeable
about these implementations fill me in? Respond by E-mail and I will
summarize to the net.
