Getting rid of zombie <exiting> processes - How ?

This has probably been asked a thousand times but ...

How do you kill or get rid of zombie processes that are <exiting>
but still getting lots of CPU ?  I seem to remember something about
using adb - any pointers ?

My system is a Vax 11/780 running BSD 4.2
