On Oct 31st 1988 Harvard University will be releasing a Request For Information
(RFI) concerning a proposed High Speed Data Network (HSDN) that has as its
purpose linking together LANs in many of Harvard's 500+ buildings and to link
these LANs to a number of external networks, (NSFNET, ARPANET, BITNET etc).

The RFI also makes the assumption that a Network Operations Center (NOC) will
be required and that the management tools that are used for the NOC to manage
the HSDN itself will also be used to manage many of the building LANs.

The RFI addresses the HSDN hardware and software, the interfaces between the
HSDN and the LANs, the hardware and software for the NOC, facilities for
connections between the HSDN and the ISDN part of the new Harvard phone system,
and hardware and software for selected services that will be HSDN based.

Harvard would like to get the widest distribution for this RFI and to get as
many responses to all or part of the RFI as it can. The RFI will be made
available for anonymous FTP and we will send a copy to any firm that requests
one.

We welcome any and all comments on the RFI from all sources.

The reason for a posting at this time is to get the names of firms that would
like to get a copy of the RFI sent to them. (All firms that get a copy of the
RFI from us will get copies of any questions that other firms ask and our
responses.)

If your firm would like to get a copy of the RFI please send me the address
to send it to.
