A couple of students at the University of Colorado, Boulder have
recently completed a software product which determines various
characteristics of magnetic tapes. Currently, it is possible to
obtain which format the tape was written in ,such as tar, ANSI-D,
or VMS-ANSI. In addition, the program determines the character set
of the tape (ASCII, EBCDIC, PRIME), block size, and the names of the
files written on the tape. The output which includes all of the items
mentioned previously also includes a data dump whose format and number
of characters are user specified.

We are in the process of trying to determine the tape's density and
would appreciate any input on how to go about solving this problem.
If you have any ideas, or interested in the manual page on this
product, mail to the following address:

Thanks,
