tr command works on some machines, but not on others.

Does anyone know why the tr command 'tr -s "[a-zA-Z]" "[m-za-lM-ZA-L]"'
will work fine on some OS's, e.g., SunOS 4.0, but gives the
error message "Bad string" on others, e.g., SCO Xenix and Arix System V3.1?

Please respond directly and I will post a summary to the newsgroup.
