Need help with xdr_string()

I've been trying to use the xdr_string() function to send text
strings between two processes running on different computers.
The funtion seems to work fine when the strings are less then
eight characters long.  However when the strings are greater then
eitht characters I get a message like "RPC can't encode arguments".
If you have any idea why this might be happening please let me
know.  Thanks in advace.
